Focus on Chronic Hyperkalemia in Older Adults

Hyperkalemia, an abnormally high potassium level in the body, is a common electrolyte disturbance in older adults. Although potassium is an important nutrient for healthy living, too much potassium can result in muscle weakness, cramping, and an irregular heartbeat. Hyperkalemia is generally attributed to conditions that limit the kidneys’ ability to eliminate potassium but includes other causes.
